Manitoba NDP MP Jim Maloway is prepared to cut the fines within his Passenger Bill of Rights after criticism that such fines would hinder the bill’s progress in the House of Commons. The bill, now under scrutiny by the Transportation Committee, essentially charges airlines for passenger inconveniences like lost luggage, delayed or cancelled flights, and waiting inside the plane for a lengthy amount of time before take-off.

Last week bill C-391 passed second reading in the House of Commons and now moves to committee. The private-members bill aims to abolish the federal long-gun registry. The issue has created a split between urban and rural Canada; many police chiefs oppose the bill, while hunters and farmers favour it.
