Summary: As of September 2010, 600 Ontario elementary schools will offer full-day kindergarten, sources have told the Toronto Star. In an announcement expected Tuesday, Premier Dalton McGuinty will explain the 1.5 Billion dollar initiative, which is expected to be fully implemented by 2015. The program will enroll 35 000 four and five-year-olds in Ontario, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Low cost school care will also be available before and after school hours. Critics of the plan have questioned whether or not the provincial government can afford the program given the current economic climate.
Excerpt: “Bruce Davis, chair of the Toronto District School Board, said parents will see their children thrive under the full-day program, as well as reap benefits from the convenience of one drop-off and pick-up location.”
